There are lots of things to see and do!
Fort Augustus is a pretty village which has both the famous Caledonian Canal and the River Oich flowing through it and out into Loch Ness. The village is about half way between Fort William , which is the outdoor capital of the UK and Inverness the capital of the Highlands.
There are a couple of good canal-side pubs and eateries, interesting gift shops, a post office, cash machines, a petrol station and local stores. Many boats travel up and down the flight of locks at Fort Augustus and you may catch the swing bridge opening to allow larger craft to pass through on their journey through the Great Glen. The area inspires many artists and photographers due to its natural beauty. Click to view some oil paintings and photography by a local artist Mark McCallum.
